The Indian government has approved four new semiconductor manufacturing projects in the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab, with a combined investment of approximately Rs 4,594 crore (around Rs 4,600 crore). This decision was made by the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the India Semiconductor Mission, bringing the total number of projects under this initiative to ten. The projects aim to strengthen India's semiconductor ecosystem and support its digital future and global innovation leadership. Odisha will host two of these new semiconductor plants. This move aligns with India's broader ambitions to boost electronics manufacturing, as evidenced by a 47% surge in electronics exports in Q1 FY26, reaching $12.4 billion, and a decade-long increase in production from $31 billion to $133 billion. Additionally, Cyient has launched a $100 million semiconductor division focused on designing power-efficient ASICs for various sectors including automotive and aerospace. Samsung is expanding its manufacturing presence in India, and Tata is developing the country's first commercial-scale silicon fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. Furthermore, Pavna Industries has formed a joint venture with Taiwan’s SmartChip Microelectronic Corporation to advance electric vehicle technology, and Foxconn has commenced small-scale production of the iPhone 17 Pro at a new Rs 25,000 crore facility in Bengaluru. These developments underscore India's strategic efforts to enhance its semiconductor and electronics manufacturing capabilities amid global competition.
