The Indian government has taken significant action against cybercrime by blocking over 17,000 WhatsApp accounts linked to fraud activities. This crackdown, led by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in collaboration with the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, targets accounts primarily operated by cybercriminals from South-East Asia. The initiative aims to dismantle networks of foreign criminals and enhance digital security within the country. Reports indicate that a builder in Ahmedabad fell victim to a digital arrest scam, losing ₹1 crore, which prompted the investigation and subsequent blocking of the accounts. The MHA's efforts reflect a growing concern over the rapid increase in cybercrimes, which often exploit social media information to perpetrate fraud.
