India has formally proposed retaliatory tariffs against the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to the U.S. imposition of 25% ad valorem tariffs on imports of light trucks, passenger vehicles, and auto parts from India. These U.S. tariffs, introduced on March 26, 2025, were described by India as safeguard measures. The Indian government notified the WTO’s Council for Trade in Goods of its plan to impose retaliatory duties worth approximately $724 million to $725 million on U.S. imports. India also reserved the right to suspend concessions or other obligations under WTO rules equivalent to the adverse effects of the U.S. measures on Indian trade. The U.S. tariffs affect Indian exports valued at around $2.89 billion in the automobile sector. Despite the proposal for retaliatory tariffs, India indicated that trade negotiations with the U.S. would continue. The move comes amid ongoing trade tensions and ahead of a negotiation deadline on July 9, 2025, related to the suspension of the additional U.S. tariffs. India’s action aims to counterbalance the impact of the American safeguard measures and to leverage trade talks with the U.S.
