India expects to roll out its first commercially produced semiconductor chip before the end of 2025, Secretary of Electronics and Information Technology S. Krishnan said in New Delhi on Friday. The milestone would mark the country’s entry into global chip manufacturing, complementing its existing strength in design services. Krishnan said 10 government-backed semiconductor projects have been approved and are at various stages of execution. Funding under the initial Semicon One incentive program is “almost fully committed,” and officials are drafting a follow-up Semicon 2 scheme to keep capital flowing into the sector. The official added that India continues to apply zero import tariffs on finished electronics for now, even as it seeks to boost domestic production. He also said the Semicon India 2025 conference, scheduled for later this year, is expected to attract delegates from 33 countries and more than 50 chief executives.
