The Department of Consumer Affairs in India has organized a stakeholder consultation to address the issue of fake online reviews. The department aims to mandate the implementation of Indian Standard (IS) 19000:2022, which outlines principles and requirements for online consumer reviews. The initiative has received support from e-commerce firms, which back the government's proposal to make anti-fake review rules mandatory. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare emphasized that fake reviews undermine the trustworthiness and credibility of online shopping platforms. The Bureau of Indian Standards is set to introduce mandatory guidelines requiring transparency and disclaimers on review authenticity within six months. Additionally, as part of a 100-day plan, the government plans to launch an app targeting deceptive methods used by companies to mislead consumers. The new rules will apply to e-commerce portals like Amazon, Flipkart, and Google.
