The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) in India has proposed a comprehensive overhaul of the regulatory framework governing television rating agencies. The draft amendments aim to remove entry barriers, allowing multiple agencies to participate in television ratings measurement, thereby fostering competition and encouraging the adoption of new technologies. The updated policy seeks to modernize the TRP (Television Rating Point) system by addressing gaps in measuring viewership across streaming and mobile platforms, reflecting evolving TV consumption habits. The ministry has opened a 30-day public feedback period on these proposed changes. Separately, the MIB has banned 25 Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, including Ullu, ALTT, Desiflix, and Big Shots, for hosting and distributing sexually explicit content. This action is based on violations of the Information Technology Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and laws against the indecent representation of women. The ban targets platforms that offered adult-themed content distinct from other OTT services. The government’s crackdown on these OTT platforms has prompted discussions on alternative streaming options, including the use of VPN services in India.
