Infosys, India's second-largest IT company, has been involved in a significant tax dispute with the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI). The company faced a tax demand of approximately Rs 32,000 crore for unpaid Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) under the reverse charge mechanism for services from its overseas branches between 2017 and 2022. Recently, the DGGI closed the pre-show cause notice proceedings for the financial year 2017-2018, worth Rs 3,898 crore, which was part of the larger dispute. Despite this closure, reports indicate that the Indian government is not considering any relaxation on the tax demand, which amounts to $4 billion. Infosys has sought additional time to respond to the notice and has met with tax officials to discuss the matter.
