Mumbai Police have launched helplines and deployed a specialized team called 'Digital Rakshak' to combat a rising cybercrime known as the 'digital arrest' scam. The scam has notably affected prominent individuals, including a monk from the Ramakrishna Mission who was digitally held for 26 days and lost approximately Rs 2.52 crore. Additionally, a retired army colonel and his wife fell victim to a similar scam, losing Rs 49 lakh. The Mumbai Crime Branch uncovered a related cyber fraud involving a fake website impersonating the High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) service, which defrauded victims of substantial sums. The Reserve Bank of India is currently verifying the funds in the Ramakrishna Mission's account as claimed by the scammers, with plans to restore the money to the institution upon confirmation. Authorities are urging the public to use the helpline services to avoid falling prey to such scams.
