Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in August 2025, concluding a 16-year career that began in 2009. Ashwin, a spinner, played for multiple IPL teams including Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, before returning to CSK in his final season. He finished as the IPL's fifth highest wicket-taker with 187 wickets. Throughout his career, Ashwin was a seven-time IPL finalist and two-time IPL winner, both titles won with CSK, and also won the Champions League T20 twice with the same team. He was named player of the tournament in the 2010 Champions League T20 in South Africa. Ashwin was known for his willingness to take on challenging overs and experiment with his bowling. Notably, he was the first player in IPL history to be run out at the non-striker's end and the first to retire out during a match. Following his IPL retirement, Ashwin expressed his intention to explore opportunities in cricket leagues around the world.
