The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has barred Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi, his wife Maria Goretti, and 57 others from participating in the securities market for periods ranging from one to five years, following an investigation into a stock manipulation scheme involving Sadhna Broadcast Limited, now known as Crystal Business System Ltd. SEBI found that the group engaged in a 'pump and dump' scheme between March and November 2022, using misleading YouTube videos and WhatsApp messages to artificially inflate the price and trading volume of Sadhna Broadcast shares. These videos were promoted on channels such as Moneywise, The Advisor, Profit Yatra, Midcap Calls, and India Bullish, and were amplified through a paid marketing campaign. Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti were specifically banned for one year and fined Rs 5 lakh each. SEBI reported that Warsi made a profit of Rs 41.70 lakh and Goretti earned Rs 50.35 lakh from the scheme. SEBI has also ordered the recovery of Rs 1.05 crore from Warsi and his family, and directed all 59 penalized entities to disgorge unlawful gains totaling Rs 58.01 crore, with interest. Seven individuals received five-year bans. Manish Mishra was fined Rs 5 crore, Gaurav Gupta Rs 2 crore, and Jatin Manubhai Shah Rs 1 crore. Gaurav Gupta reportedly gained Rs 18.33 crore and Sadhna Bio Oils Pvt. Ltd gained Rs 9.41 crore through the scheme. The SEBI order identified Gaurav Gupta, Rakesh Kumar Gupta, and Manish Mishra as masterminds of the operation, with several other individuals and promoters of Sadhna Broadcast facilitating the scheme. The investigation was triggered by a whistleblower complaint and included analysis of trading data, bank transactions, and electronic evidence.
