The Supreme Court of India has ruled that mere disapproval of a marriage does not amount to abetment of suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This decision was made while quashing charges against a woman accused of abetting another woman's suicide. The court emphasized that there was no direct or indirect instigation by the accused to push the deceased to take her own life. The judgment clarified that actions such as expressing disapproval or making disparaging remarks do not meet the threshold for abetment under the law. The bench, comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma, noted that the acts of the accused were too remote and indirect to constitute the offense.
