Separately, the New York Blood Center (NYBC), one of the largest nonprofit blood centers in the United States, faced a ransomware attack on January 26, 2025, disrupting its operations amid an ongoing blood shortage crisis. The attack has led to canceled appointments and delays in processing blood donations, with no specific timeline for system restoration. NYBC supplies blood products to over 400 hospitals across 15 states and had declared a blood emergency prior to the attack due to a 30% drop in donations. The organization is working with external experts to restore systems and ensure continuity of services.
