The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought was observed globally on June 17, 2025, with a focus on raising awareness about land degradation and drought. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) led this year's observance under the theme "Restore the land; Unlock the opportunities," emphasizing the importance of land restoration to create jobs, enhance food and water security, and support sustainable development. India, which has been actively participating in this day since 1995, reaffirmed its commitment to environmental justice, land protection, and empowering farmers for a sustainable future. The day also highlighted the annual loss of approximately 1 million square kilometers of productive land worldwide and called for collective action to preserve soil, conserve water, and promote mindful living habits such as planting trees and saving water to protect the planet's resources.
