Indonesia is responding to a measles outbreak in East Java's Sumenep Regency, where 2,105 cases have been reported, resulting in 17 child fatalities, most of whom were unvaccinated. The East Java provincial government has declared the situation an extraordinary event and initiated a mass vaccination campaign across 26 community health centers over a 21-day period. This outbreak highlights a broader national challenge, as only 72% of Indonesian children under five received the measles vaccine last year. Additionally, in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province, authorities have recorded 281 suspected measles cases from January to August 2025 and continue to monitor the situation closely. The vaccination efforts aim to curb the spread and prevent further deaths amid concerns over immunization gaps in the country.
