The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has clarified recent public concerns regarding alleged salary increases for its members. Puan Maharani, Chairwoman of the DPR, denied any raise in the basic salary, emphasizing that the reported increase was actually a housing allowance compensation due to the discontinuation of official state-provided residences. The basic monthly salary of DPR members remains at approximately Rp 4.2 million, unchanged for around 15 years. However, various allowances have seen adjustments, including a housing allowance reportedly reaching Rp 50 million per month, a rice allowance with conflicting reports ranging from Rp 200,000 to Rp 12 million per month, and a fuel allowance increasing from around Rp 4-5 million to Rp 7 million monthly. The Secretary-General of the DPR, Indra Iskandar, and Deputy Speaker Adies Kadir confirmed these allowance changes but reiterated no increase in the base salary. The Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) criticized the Rp 50 million monthly housing allowance, highlighting that it could burden the state budget by Rp 1.74 trillion over five years and equates to the salary of 36,000 teachers. Public debate continues over the appropriateness of these allowances amid ongoing economic difficulties faced by the general population. Meanwhile, in Argentina, national senators are set to receive a gross salary exceeding 10.2 million pesos starting November, following a new wage agreement between legislative authorities and unions.
