On August 25, 2025, a large-scale civil demonstration titled "Revolusi Rakyat Indonesia" took place in front of the Indonesian Parliament building (DPR/MPR RI) in Senayan, Central Jakarta. The protest was primarily driven by public discontent over the high salaries and housing allowances of parliament members, reportedly reaching Rp 230 million per month, with housing allowances of Rp 50 million monthly, amounting to Rp 600 million annually or Rp 3 billion over a five-year term. The demonstration involved thousands of participants, including students and labor groups, who voiced strong criticism against the parliament's perceived insensitivity amid economic hardships faced by the public. The protest escalated into clashes between police and demonstrators, with police using water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Several incidents of violence occurred, including confrontations near the Pejompongan flyover and damage to public facilities. Police detained hundreds of protesters, including many students, with some being released shortly after. The government apologized for disruptions to public services caused by the protests. Following the unrest, the Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, announced that housing allowances for parliament members would be discontinued after October 2025. On August 28, 2025, a second major protest was held by approximately 10,000 workers from various regions in front of the DPR and the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, demanding higher wages, the abolition of outsourcing, and other labor-related issues. This demonstration also turned violent, resulting in traffic disruptions, including the paralysis of two toll roads in Senayan, and further confrontations with police forces. During the protest, a tactical police vehicle (rantis) reportedly ran over an online motorcycle taxi driver, who later died from the incident. Police and government officials, including National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and the State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, expressed regret and initiated investigations into the incident. Authorities also urged schools to prevent student participation in demonstrations and prepared traffic management plans in response to the protests.
