Indonesia’s government and the House of Representatives’ Commission VIII on Monday completed deliberations on revisions to the Law on the Management of Hajj and Umrah, agreeing to convert the Badan Penyelenggara Haji (BP Haji) into a dedicated Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Legislator Achmad of the Democratic Party said the upgrade is intended to improve service quality for future pilgrims. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar welcomed the decision and expressed hope that the transfer of hajj services from his ministry to the new institution will proceed smoothly. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi is preparing a presidential regulation to give the new ministry legal standing once the revised law is ratified. Deputy BP Haji head Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak added that forthcoming ministerial regulations will allow non-Muslims to serve in certain support roles—such as information technology and administration—particularly in provinces with small Muslim populations. He stressed that these staff will not handle tasks that directly involve religious rites, ensuring compliance with Islamic requirements.
