Indonesia was hit by its most serious street unrest in nearly a year after a police tactical vehicle struck and killed 21-year-old motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan during clashes outside parliament late on Thursday. Thousands of students, delivery riders and other citizens returned to the streets of Jakarta on Friday, hurling rocks and fireworks at security forces who responded with tear gas and water cannon. Similar demonstrations flared in Bandung, Surabaya, Makassar and Gorontalo, with crowds chanting against police brutality and a cost-of-living squeeze. Local aid groups said about 600 people were detained and dozens injured. The protests were triggered by anger over a proposed 50 million-rupiah ($3,030) monthly housing allowance for lawmakers—nearly ten times the capital’s minimum wage—and quickly evolved into broader calls for political and economic reform. President Prabowo Subianto, facing what analysts describe as the first major test of his 10-month-old administration, said he was “shocked and disappointed by the excessive actions of the officers” and ordered a ‘thorough and transparent’ inquiry. Jakarta police chief Asep Edi Suheri apologised to Kurniawan’s family, while the national force placed seven officers who were in the vehicle under 20-day detention for an ethics investigation. The turmoil rattled financial markets in Southeast Asia’s largest economy. The rupiah slid 0.9% to 16,495 per dollar and the Jakarta Composite Index fell as much as 2.3% before trimming losses to close 1.5% lower, its weakest finish in more than two weeks. Banks instructed staff to work from home, some schools closed early and the military was deployed around key government buildings as authorities sought to prevent further escalation.
