A new strain of the Banshee Stealer malware is targeting macOS users, compromising sensitive data including browser information and cryptocurrency wallets. The malware has reportedly evaded detection by mimicking Apple’s XProtect encryption, which has led to concerns about its impact on user security. Check Point Research indicated that this version of Banshee has been active since mid-2024 and managed to avoid antivirus detection for two months. While some reports have raised alarms about the malware's threat level, an Apple security expert suggested that major media outlets may have overstated the risks involved. Users are advised to update their macOS system software to patch vulnerabilities and protect their data from this malware.
