CoinMarketCap experienced a front-end security breach on June 20-21, 2025, where hackers injected a malicious pop-up prompting users to "verify wallet," aiming to steal cryptocurrency funds. The vulnerability exploited the rotating doodles feature of the website. CoinMarketCap quickly identified and removed the malicious code, fully restoring system operations. Initial on-chain analysis revealed 39 victims with a combined loss of approximately $18,570, which CoinMarketCap has pledged to cover. Users who accessed the site during the compromise period were advised to revoke token approvals as a precaution. Following this incident, Cointelegraph also suffered a front-end compromise around June 23, 2025, displaying fraudulent pop-ups falsely offering "CoinTelegraph ICO Airdrops" or "CTG tokens" to users. Cointelegraph warned users not to click on these pop-ups, connect wallets, or provide personal information while actively working on a fix. Security firms PeckShield and SlowMist confirmed the breaches and urged vigilance. The attacks mark a trend of hackers targeting cryptocurrency information websites with phishing schemes designed to drain wallets.
