Florida's Operation Triple Threat Seizes 40 Phones, Uncovers $13M in Senior Scams by Inmates

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Operation Triple Threat, targeting scams against seniors conducted by inmates using contraband technology. The operation involved collaboration with Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Ricky Dixon, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Mark Glass. Investigators seized about 40 cellphones from three Florida prisons, revealing that inmates used these devices, drones, and cryptocurrency to perpetrate scams. These schemes included convincing seniors to pay for fake fines, services, or enter fraudulent relationships. Some scams led to individual losses exceeding $100,000, and a 92-year-old victim lost more than $800,000 over two years. Brevard County seniors have lost $13 million since 2021. Officials described the acts as 'despicable, repulsive, and abhorrent.' No formal charges have been filed yet, but law enforcement indicated that additional details and charges will be announced as investigations continue.
