Mexico City’s Cyber Police has issued an alert about a new digital fraud scheme that uses artificial-intelligence generated videos to lure victims into downloading malicious software. The scam relies on websites that imitate legitimate AI video-creation platforms, ultimately stealing personal data and, in some cases, extorting money from users. Investigators said the tactic is spreading through social media links promising free contests, raffles and video-editing tools. Authorities noted an uptick in complaints from older adults, a group seen as particularly vulnerable, and urged residents to verify website addresses and avoid sharing personal information with unverified services. The warning comes amid a global surge in AI-enabled crime. A report cited by crypto-exchange Bitget found that deepfake technology accounted for 40% of high-value cryptocurrency fraud in 2024, contributing to an estimated US$4.6 billion in losses. Security researchers at CRIL have also uncovered phishing campaigns that embed malicious URLs inside fake crypto applications. Private companies are sounding alarms as well. Binance cautioned users to ignore unsolicited requests from individuals posing as customer-support agents and to avoid scanning unknown QR codes that can trigger full account takeovers. Separately, Scale AI said its social-media account was briefly compromised to promote an unauthorized $SCALE token; the firm published the legitimate contract address and advised investors to rely solely on official communication channels.
