Prince George's County Police have arrested two suspects, Parmveer Parmveer of Grove City, Ohio, and Gyoung Lee of Flushing, New York, in connection with two separate tech support scam cases that resulted in large financial losses for victims. In the first case, victims were targeted through a computer pop-up alert urging them to contact Apple security. Scammers, posing as Apple security agents, Federal Trade Commission representatives, and bank officials, convinced the victims their money was at risk, leading them to withdraw cash, deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM, and purchase gold, which was then picked up by a courier. The total loss in this case was nearly $700,000. The second case involved a similar scam initiated by a pop-up alert instructing the victim to contact Microsoft Support. The scammers pretended to be a tech support agent, a U.S. Treasury Department representative, and a bank official, convincing the victim to withdraw $60,000 in cash and hand it over to a courier. Both suspects were apprehended when they arrived to collect the money or valuables. Authorities report that scams in Prince George's County have resulted in over $1 million in reported losses so far this year. Police advise the public to avoid giving money or valuables to unknown individuals and to verify security issues directly with companies or banks using official contact information. Separately, the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., has issued a warning about ongoing phone scams in which suspects spoof police phone numbers to defraud victims, often by impersonating law enforcement and demanding payment for fictitious fines.
