Diego Borella, a 47-year-old assistant director working on the Netflix comedy-drama “Emily in Paris,” died after collapsing on set in Venice on 21 August, according to local health authorities and Paramount Television Studios. The crew was preparing to film a final scene for the show’s fifth season at the historic Hotel Danieli when Borella suffered a sudden medical episode shortly after 7 p.m. Attempts by on-site medics and ambulance staff to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. A local doctor cited a likely heart attack as the cause. Paramount Television Studios, which produces the series, confirmed the fatality and expressed condolences to Borella’s family and colleagues. Production was paused for two days while cast and crew processed the loss but resumed on 23 August in Venice. The fifth season of “Emily in Paris” has been filming this summer in Venice and Rome and is scheduled to debut globally on Netflix on 18 December. Borella, a Venice native trained in Rome, London and New York, was known for his work across film, theatre and literature. His death has prompted fresh discussion of the demanding conditions faced by assistant directors in the entertainment industry.
