Italian firefighters and army units are battling a wildfire that has been burning since Friday on the forested slopes of Mount Vesuvius near Naples, forcing authorities to close all hiking trails and tourist access to the volcano. Smoke from the blaze is visible from the city and from the nearby Pompeii archaeological site, which remains open. The national fire service said it has 12 ground teams supported by six Canadair water-bombers working on three active fronts, while drones are being used to monitor the spread of the flames. Park director Raffaele de Luca estimated that about 500 hectares have been scorched. Local prosecutors have opened an investigation into the fire’s origin. High temperatures and strong winds are complicating containment efforts, according to regional civil-protection chief Italo Giulivo. Farming lobby Coldiretti warned of “enormous” damage to vineyards, apricot orchards and tomato fields that underpin the area’s economy. Vesuvius National Park attracted roughly 620,000 visitors last year; officials gave no timeline for when access might be restored.
