Armed men who reportedly crossed into Ivory Coast from neighboring Burkina Faso attacked the village of Difita, about two kilometers from the border, on 24 Aug. The assailants burned roughly 20 houses, killed four villagers, injured one other person and abducted another, local security sources said. Authorities and regional analysts suspect the attackers belong to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated coalition active in Burkina Faso. The incident highlights the growing spillover of jihadist violence from Burkina Faso, where Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s junta is struggling to contain an Islamist insurgency. Ivory Coast’s government has yet to announce arrests or heightened security measures, but officials have repeatedly warned of cross-border threats in the sparsely patrolled northern regions. The latest assault underscores the broader Sahel insecurity that continues to encroach on coastal West African states.
