Japan has recorded a total of 135 cases of Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) in 2025, marking the highest number of infections since the disease was first reported domestically in 2013. SFTS is a viral infection transmitted by ticks, with a domestic fatality rate estimated at around 27% to 30%. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has issued warnings and preventive measures, advising people to wear long sleeves and long pants when in grassy or wooded areas to reduce the risk of tick bites. The infection, previously concentrated in western Japan, has expanded to regions including Hokkaido, Kanto, and Chubu. More than 10 deaths have been reported this year. The number of cases reported during the week of August 4 to 10 was eight, indicating ongoing transmission. The rise in infections highlights the need for increased awareness and caution during outdoor activities.
