Japanese authorities have seized approximately one metric ton of dried cannabis, marking the largest drug bust in the country's history. The cannabis, estimated to be worth about ¥5.2 billion ($35.2 million), was found in a shipping container on a vessel that departed from Vietnam and docked at a Tokyo pier in June. The shipment was disguised as binchotan charcoal. Following X-ray inspections by Tokyo Customs and a controlled delivery operation, the destination was identified as a storage site in Tochigi Prefecture, with the cargo addressed to a business in Osaka. Three Vietnamese nationals have been arrested and charged on suspicion of involvement in the smuggling operation. The seizure was announced by the Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Narcotics Control Department under the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
