Japan-listed investment firm Metaplanet said it purchased an additional 518 Bitcoin for ¥9.08 billion ($61.4 million) on 12 August, paying an average ¥17.5 million—about $118,519—per coin. The acquisition lifts the company’s treasury to 18,113 BTC, worth roughly $2.1 billion at current market prices, solidifying Metaplanet’s position as the largest corporate Bitcoin holder in Asia and the sixth-largest worldwide. Metaplanet is pursuing what it calls its “555 Million Plan,” which targets holdings of 100,000 BTC by year-end 2026 and 210,000 BTC by 2027. The company has relied on bond issues and warrants to finance purchases and says Bitcoin serves as a long-term reserve asset amid persistent yen weakness and negative real yields. The latest buy comes as other firms step up similar strategies. On 7 August, New York-based Parataxis Capital agreed to merge with blank-check company SilverBox Corp IV, a deal that could provide up to $640 million for a Bitcoin-focused treasury program. Parataxis has already earmarked $31 million for initial coin purchases and aims to list the combined entity on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker PRTX in the fourth quarter, pending regulatory approvals. The firm has also established a South Korean affiliate to capitalise on demand in a market where institutions face restrictions on spot-Bitcoin ETFs. According to industry data, more than 230 publicly traded companies now disclose Bitcoin on their balance sheets, nearly double the figure at the start of the year. Analysts say the parallel moves by Metaplanet and Parataxis underscore growing institutional acceptance of Bitcoin as a treasury alternative and could encourage further corporate adoption if macroeconomic conditions remain supportive.
