Nissan Motor is undertaking a global workforce reduction plan targeting a 15% cut, which includes reducing about 250 jobs at its Sunderland plant in the UK. Despite a £2 billion investment in electric vehicle production at Sunderland, the company is moving forward with voluntary job cuts due to weak sales. In Japan, Nissan announced it will cease production at its historic Oppama and Shonan plants in Kanagawa Prefecture by March 2028 as part of its restructuring efforts. The Oppama plant, which employs approximately 3,900 workers, will be repurposed or sold, with Nissan seeking buyers and denying plans for joint ventures or contract manufacturing with Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry). Nissan is also exploring collaboration with Foxconn on electric vehicle production to maintain employment at its Oppama facility. The production shutdown has prompted local government responses, with Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka requesting financial support measures from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to assist small and medium-sized enterprises affected by the closures. Separately, Jaguar Land Rover announced plans to cut 500 jobs in its UK operations amid industry challenges.
