On August 24, 2025, the Tohoku Shinkansen suspended operations between Tokyo and Morioka due to a train malfunction. The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. on the Yamabiko 63 service between Omiya and Oyama stations in Saitama Prefecture, where a vehicle fault triggered the emergency brake system, causing the train to stop. JR East confirmed that the suspension affected both directions on the line, with no injuries or health issues reported among approximately 560 passengers aboard the affected train. Services were halted for about three hours, with the line resuming operation around 5 p.m. Despite the resumption, timetable disruptions continued throughout the day. The disruption impacted approximately 69,000 passengers, with 49 trains canceled and 88 delayed. JR East is investigating the precise cause of the vehicle malfunction that led to the emergency brake activation. Normal service on the Tohoku Shinkansen was expected to resume from the first train on August 25.
