Kenya’s political and civic leaders used a two-day National Dialogue to mark the 15th anniversary of the 2010 Constitution, arguing that the charter’s promise remains largely unfulfilled. Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo warned that land grabbing, hidden schooling costs and an overstretched health system continue to erode basic rights, while Professor Ben Sihanya of the University of Nairobi said the country must prioritise full implementation and stronger accountability mechanisms rather than frequent overhauls. Caroli Omondi, who chairs Parliament’s Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee, told a separate television forum that lawmakers should revisit the charter’s shelved provision to phase out the women’s representative seats after 20 years and instead adopt a long-delayed formula to meet the two-thirds gender-balance requirement across elective offices. Other panellists highlighted persisting delays in devolved-fund transfers and disputes over constituency development funds, signalling that structural gaps rather than textual flaws are hindering progress. Speakers generally agreed that any amendment push must be anchored in a clear diagnosis of shortcomings, with several warning that piecemeal political tweaks could weaken safeguards that have underpinned Kenya’s relatively stable democracy over the past decade and a half.
Boniface Nyamu: The Constitution is still a very beautiful document, it has not become ugly…When you say we need to amend the Constitution you must tell me what is the problem with the current Constitution so that we can amend it #CitizenDayBreak https://t.co/9RQdslcp2F
Dennis Kosgei: The Kenyan Constitution is overrated…This document should be made in a way where it evolves with the environment #CitizenDayBreak https://t.co/WbcKMAPhTk
Janet Watoro: We’ve not fully implemented devolution, we have issues of delayed disbursement, separation of powers and MPs trying to hold onto CDF which is unconstitutional…We still have a long way to go #CitizenDayBreak https://t.co/6NI75J7v9N
