Kenyan authorities have opened an investigation into violence that erupted during the return of former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua from the United States on Thursday. Supporters escorting the Democracy for the Citizens Party leader from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport were attacked by stone-wielding youths along the airport road and on Jogoo Road, leaving several people, including journalists, injured and vehicles damaged. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the organisers failed to provide police with an advance itinerary, hampering crowd-control preparations. He condemned what he called the hiring of "goons" to disrupt the procession and vowed that anyone who financed or coordinated the attacks will be arrested regardless of political status. Gachagua’s allies blame President William Ruto’s administration for the chaos, escalating tensions between the Democracy for the Citizens Party and the government. The probe will examine both the security lapses and allegations of political interference in the incident.
