South Korean special prosecutors on Friday indicted Kim Keon Hee, the wife of ousted former president Yoon Suk Yeol, on multiple counts of bribery, stock-price manipulation and illegal political funding. It is the first time a former first lady has faced criminal trial in the country. Investigators allege Kim pocketed about 810 million won (USD 580,000) through a stock-rigging scheme involving Deutsch Motors and accepted luxury goods valued at roughly 80 million won from a former Unification Church official in return for influence. The prosecution has asked a court to seize 1.03 billion won believed to be illicit proceeds. Kim has been in custody since her 12 August arrest and denies wrongdoing. In a separate filing the same day, another special counsel indicted former prime minister Han Duck-soo without detention on charges of abetting Yoon’s aborted declaration of martial law on 3 December 2024, as well as perjury and falsifying state documents. A Seoul court earlier rejected an arrest warrant, citing limited flight risk. The twin indictments intensify legal pressure on the previous administration. Yoon was impeached and removed from office in April and is already on trial for insurrection. Prosecutors have also charged several former ministers and military commanders, underscoring the breadth of the investigations into the short-lived martial-law attempt and alleged corruption surrounding the erstwhile ruling circle.
