Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has been accused of hindering competition in the insurance market through an antitrust lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Blue Cross billed some customers tens of thousands of dollars in annual fees for using a rival carrier and caused employers to pay excessive fees. The lawsuit also accuses Blue Cross of a 'phantom tax'. Additionally, BlueCross BlueShield has been asked to reimburse $2 million to state taxpayers.
