A Louisiana jury has ordered Chevron Corp. to pay $745 million for environmental damage caused to the state's coastal wetlands in Plaquemines Parish. The verdict stems from a lawsuit filed over a decade ago against Chevron, which acquired Texaco in 2001. The jury found that Texaco had violated a 1978 Louisiana law on coastal resource regulations for decades by failing to restore wetlands affected by its operations, including dredging canals, drilling wells, and disposing of wastewater. The damages awarded include $575 million for land loss, $161 million for contamination, and $9 million for abandoned equipment. Chevron's lead attorney, Mike Phillips, stated that the company plans to appeal the verdict, citing numerous legal errors. The case is part of a broader legal effort in Louisiana to hold oil companies accountable for coastal erosion and environmental degradation.
