The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to distribute over $25.5 million in refunds to 736,375 Windows users who fell victim to tech support scams operated by Cyprus-based companies Restoro and Reimage. The payments, scheduled to begin on March 13 and 14, 2025, will be made via PayPal to consumers who were misled into purchasing unnecessary computer repair services. The scam involved fake Windows pop-ups that falsely claimed consumers' systems were infected with viruses, prompting them to buy software to fix the alleged issues. The FTC's action follows a settlement with Restoro Cyprus Limited and Reimage Cyprus Limited, which were fined $26 million in March 2024 for deceptive practices.
