A federal judge in San Francisco has ruled that approximately 150 older workers laid off by the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, can sue for age discrimination as a class. The ruling, made by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, allows these workers to pursue claims that they were unfairly targeted during mass layoffs overseen by Elon Musk after his acquisition of the company in late 2022. The potential damages from this class-action lawsuit could reach millions of dollars. The complaint, brought by plaintiff John Zeman, alleges that X cut nearly 60% of employees older than 50 and nearly 67% of employees older than 60, compared to only 54% of workers younger than 50. These layoffs included entire departments.
