Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on 12 Aug 2025 filed a lawsuit against Eli Lilly & Co., accusing the U.S. drugmaker of bribing and otherwise illegally inducing healthcare providers to prescribe its most profitable medicines. The complaint says Lilly offered kickbacks to promote use of the GLP-1 medications Mounjaro and Zepbound, drugs approved for type-2 diabetes and widely sought for weight-loss. Paxton contends the alleged scheme violated Texas consumer-protection and anti-kickback statutes, stating it “compromised medical decision-making.” The case builds on Paxton’s earlier actions targeting pharmaceutical pricing and marketing practices, including a 2024 suit against insulin manufacturers and pharmacy-benefit managers for alleged price manipulation. Lilly said the allegations echo a whistle-blower complaint previously dismissed by multiple courts and the federal government, and added that it will "vigorously defend" itself against the state’s claims.
