Ángel Cabrera Mendoza has been appointed as the new president of Mexico's Comisión Nacional Bancaria y de Valores (CNBV), effective September 1, 2025. Cabrera, who has extensive experience in financial regulation and previously served as coordinator of Banking and Securities at the Ministry of Finance (SHCP), will take over from Jesús de la Fuente. His appointment comes amid challenges including allegations of money laundering against three Mexican banks and the financial crisis involving CAME. The banking sector is actively addressing these issues, with the Asociación de Bancos de México (ABM) reporting the sale of assets from Intercam and CIBanco as a resolution to U.S. Treasury sanctions related to money laundering accusations. ABM President Emilio Romano announced plans to travel to the United States to engage with U.S. financial authorities, including FinCEN, to present progress on anti-money laundering efforts. The ABM also expressed confidence that ongoing U.S. investigations against two banks and a brokerage firm will be resolved before October 20. Additionally, the ABM has reported an 18% increase in credit to small and medium-sized enterprises under an agreement with the government of Mexico City’s President Claudia Sheinbaum.
