Mexican singer Ernesto Barajas, founder and lead vocalist of the regional-music band Enigma Norteño, was shot and killed on Tuesday in Zapopan, Jalisco. Police said two assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire on Barajas and his companions at a vehicle lot in the Arenales Tapatíos neighbourhood shortly before 4 p.m. local time. Barajas, 38, and a male companion died at the scene, while a woman suffered a gunshot wound to the knee and was taken to hospital. The Jalisco attorney-general’s office has launched a homicide investigation; no arrests have been reported. The singer had publicly acknowledged receiving threats in 2023, when a banner purportedly signed by the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación warned him against performing. Barajas’s death came only hours after he promoted “Hello Kitty,” the band’s latest collaboration with fellow artist Edgardo Nuñez.
