Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly denied the existence of any agreement between the Mexican government and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regarding the so-called "Proyecto Portero," an initiative announced by the DEA aimed at dismantling cartel leadership on the U.S.-Mexico border. Sheinbaum clarified that no formal accords have been signed and described the DEA's announcement as inaccurate, emphasizing that the only security-related agreement in progress is with the U.S. Department of State. She highlighted that cooperation with U.S. agencies is conducted without subordinating Mexico's sovereignty and recalled that during the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), limits were imposed on U.S. agencies' operations in Mexico, particularly after the controversial arrest of General Cienfuegos. The president also called for adherence to the principle of non-intervention amid rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and Venezuela, condemning the U.S. military deployment near Venezuela's coast and urging peaceful dialogue to resolve conflicts. Meanwhile, Venezuela's government criticized U.S. threats as destabilizing to regional peace and stability. DEA Administrator Terry Cole accused Venezuela of collaborating with Colombian guerrilla groups ELN and FARC to traffic record amounts of cocaine to Mexican cartels. Despite these accusations, Mexico maintains its position of denying joint operations with the DEA, reaffirming limits on foreign agency activities within its territory and emphasizing sovereignty and respect in bilateral relations with the United States.
