Mexico’s secretary of Anti-Corruption and Good Government, Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez, said the U.S. Department of Justice has formally asked Mexico for information on four Petróleos Mexicanos contracts that are part of a corruption probe. The Justice Department has filed criminal complaints against seven companies and two Mexican residents for allegedly bribing former Pemex officials; former executive Ramón Rovirosa has been detained in the United States while Mario Ávila remains at large. Buenrostro noted the U.S. investigation has been under way since 2024. Buenrostro added that her office will review whether five audits linked to the questioned contracts were doctored and will coordinate with U.S. authorities to determine possible liabilities of former officials involved. Separately, the secretary said the government will audit what she described as “exorbitant” pension payments at Pemex and the state-owned Comisión Federal de Electricidad to create a more accurate registry of beneficiaries.
