Netflix said it will debut the four-part documentary series “Juan Gabriel: Debo, Puedo y Quiero” on 30 October, offering what it calls an unprecedented look at the Mexican singer-songwriter’s life and career nearly a decade after his death. Directed by award-winning filmmaker María José Cuevas and produced by Laura Woldenberg and Ivonne Gutiérrez of the independent studio Mezcla, the series draws on Juan Gabriel’s private audio, video and photographic archives to trace his rise from Ciudad Juárez to international stardom. Netflix described the production as a “deeply human” portrait that includes previously unseen material and posthumous commentary recorded by the artist. Born Alberto Aguilera Valadez, Juan Gabriel sold an estimated 150 million records, composed around 1,800 songs and left an estate valued at roughly US$30 million when he died of a heart attack in 2016. The docuseries marks the latest effort to document the enduring influence of the performer known as the ‘Divo de Juárez’ on Latin American music and culture.
