The government of Mexico City has announced a free concert by Puerto Rican rapper Residente, founder and lead vocalist of Calle 13, scheduled for September 6, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Zócalo, the main square in Mexico City. Clara Brugada, head of government, described the concert as a celebration of freedom and Latin American resistance. Residente, known for his socially conscious lyrics and critical perspective, had previously canceled two concerts due to his opposition to the investment firm KKR, which he accused of indirectly contributing to the genocide of Palestinians. The concert is expected to showcase his unique blend of rhythms and energetic performance. Residente himself remarked on the significance of performing at the Zócalo, referencing its historical importance as the site where the flag of a free Mexico was first waved. The announcement has also drawn criticism from some who argue that local issues such as gentrification and infrastructure problems should be prioritized.
