President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico’s poverty rate has fallen to its lowest level in four decades, citing new data from the national statistics agency INEGI that show 13.4 million people rose out of poverty between 2018 and 2024. According to the agency, the share of Mexicans living in poverty declined to 29.6% last year from 41.9% in 2018. Sheinbaum highlighted the figures while inaugurating the Unidad de Medicina Familiar No. 93 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Ecatepec, a municipality with high social deprivation. The facility, designed to serve about 352,000 residents, replaces a clinic damaged in the 2017 earthquake and forms part of the administration’s plan to unify the country’s public-health system by 2027. The president credited higher minimum wages, social-welfare programs, public investment and job creation for the poverty reduction, but acknowledged continued challenges for women, Indigenous language speakers and other vulnerable groups. Opposition leaders welcomed the overall improvement yet urged the government to address persistent regional and demographic disparities.
