Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, co-founder of the Cártel de Sinaloa, pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court last week, admitting to running the cartel for more than five decades and to paying bribes to Mexican politicians, police and military officers. President Claudia Sheinbaum said in her daily news conference that no Mexican agency has yet received an official list of recipients of those payments. She urged anyone with evidence to file formal complaints so prosecutors can act and stressed that her government will not shield any public servant implicated in corruption. Sheinbaum also confirmed that Mexico will seek a share of the assets the United States may seize from Zambada. A New York court has ordered the forfeiture of up to US$15 billion; the president said any funds repatriated would be directed to social programmes for the country’s poorest communities. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch cautioned that the cartel remains active despite Zambada’s conviction, noting that several cells and leaders are still at large, although some factions are “significantly weakened.” Federal forces, he added, have reinforced operations in Sinaloa and other hotspots to pursue remaining commanders.
