Mexico experienced a reduction in poverty by nearly seven percentage points in 2024, bringing the poverty rate down to 29.6%, marking the largest decrease in five presidential terms. Under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), approximately 13.4 million people were lifted out of poverty, including 2 million from extreme poverty, driven by social programs, wage increases, and labor reforms. Despite these advances, significant regional disparities persist. The state of Chiapas continues to have a high concentration of extreme poverty, accounting for 22% of the country's extreme poor, with 6 out of 10 residents lacking access to healthcare services. Nationwide, 44.5 million Mexicans lack access to health services, and geographic inequalities remain in access to potable water. Informal employment remains a challenge, with 64% of young workers employed informally. Small and medium-sized enterprises (mipymes) remain crucial to the economy, generating 70% of jobs and contributing nearly 50% of GDP. Inflation exceeding 4% has impacted 2.3 million poor individuals, particularly in Durango, Nayarit, San Luis Potosí, Quintana Roo, and Aguascalientes, where incomes are insufficient to cover basic food baskets. On infrastructure, the repair of the Calzada Zaragoza sinkhole is 65% complete, and the Cutzamala water system has reached 67.5% capacity due to recent heavy rains.
