The Chicago Cubs swept a split doubleheader against the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, winning the opener 6–4 and the nightcap 4–1. The pair of victories cut Milwaukee’s National League Central lead to seven games, two fewer than at the start of the day. Rookie right-fielder Owen Caissie powered the Cubs in Game 1 with a two-run single in the first inning and his first major-league home run in the sixth, finishing with three RBIs. Willi Castro added a three-run shot, and four relievers combined for 3⅔ scoreless innings after starter Matthew Boyd departed in the sixth to secure the 6–4 result. In the second game, right-hander Jameson Taillon, activated from the injured list after a calf strain, limited Milwaukee to one run over six innings. Chicago broke a 1–1 tie on Matt Shaw’s triple and tacked on insurance runs against Brandon Woodruff and the Brewers’ bullpen to win 4–1 and hand Milwaukee consecutive defeats for the first time since late July. The sweep improves Chicago to 72–54 and evens the season series with Milwaukee at 6–6, bolstering the Cubs’ bid for a wild-card berth while applying fresh pressure in the division race.
