Major League Baseball is close to completing a reshuffle of its U.S. media rights that would run through the 2028 season, according to a report first published by Kendall Baker of Yahoo Sports. The package would see Apple abandon its "Friday Night Baseball" agreement four years early, relinquishing all MLB coverage on Apple TV+. NBC and its streaming service Peacock are expected to pick up the vacated Friday night inventory as well as add exclusive Sunday games and the Wild Card round, giving the network year-round Sunday night sports alongside existing NFL and NBA packages. Disney-owned ESPN remains in the sport by purchasing MLB.tv, the league’s out-of-market streaming service, and is exploring additional local rights deals with clubs currently distributed by MLB’s in-house platform. Netflix, meanwhile, is set to acquire rights to the annual Home Run Derby, continuing the platform’s push into live sports.
MLB’s media picture is coming into focus. Sources tell FOS that beyond NBC/Peacock and Netflix, ESPN is eyeing MLB’s local rights, with a particular interest in teams currently using the league’s in-house distribution model.
Even though Apple was meant to air "Friday Night Baseball" until 2029, a new report suggests the company will give up on the sport early, giving NBC/Peacock rights to both Friday and Sunday games. https://t.co/A1TK90NPQO
